June, 2002
The first (mostly) instrumental album in the Deer repertoire. At least that was the intention when I started it, though “Tanya Harding” and “You, Elephant, Thin Ice” ended up vocalized. It felt good to lift the boundaries of writing verses and choruses. It gave the songs the freedom to write themselves (though I’ll still take the writing credit !). There is a great diversity throughout the album, yet the flow is still very comfortable. Brian Hammond and Ryan Barfield unintentionally guest star on “Jacuzzi”; basically I blended written material into a twisted jam the 3 of us had recorded. Also, look out for my drumming debut on “Thirty Three Degrees” and “Sunshine”. I also threw in a song from my DJ FLASH days, “Third Base”. I have a few other people to thank for other types of contribution. Steve Johnson of the Eggplant Queens was kind enough to lend me his drum set. Eric Shaw gave me access to his bass guitar which was also used on a few songs. Evan Markfield appears as part of a looped jam on “Mister Plow” playing guitar. Also worth noting, this was written and recorded over the same period as the Piñata Party sessions with Brian Hammond. |
